It seems very obvious if we say that K-dramas have made their way into the hearts of millions of people around the world. Especially after the worldwide fame that “Squid Game” managed to earn, everyone got more curious about other genres that Korean TV shows have to offer. Some of the shows created such a big hype on different streaming platforms which compelled Hollywood to hop into the bandwagon. And so, some big production companies, as well as Netflix, decided to give 3 popular k-dramas a Hollywood remake.

W- Two Worlds: The original Korean drama is based on the premise of how a story unfolds when a surgical resident gets dragged into the chronicle of a webtoon illustrated by her father. The remake was officially announced by the American network CW with the title “Angel City“. The project will be produced by CBS Studios with Craig Plestis as executive producer. They are currently undergoing casting for the show.

Deadline Hollywood and online news portal introduced, “Angel City tells the story of Jules, a promising young surgeon whose stable life is upended when she gets pulled into an alternate dimension where her father’s graphic novel, and its alluring heroine, have come to life.” They also added, “It is the latest Korean format being developed in the U.S. following the likes of ABC’s The Good Doctor, produced by Daniel Dae Kim, and HBO’s TV adaptation of Parasite in the works.”

Trap(2019): The South Korean show that consisted of 7 episodes in total will be rebooted as an American show titled “The Club“. The project was initiated by Jack LoGiudice, writer of Sons of Anarchy, Chris Philip, president of Starlings Television, and Karine Martin, CEO of Starlings Entertainment, as executive producers.

So far, Ma Dong Seok has been affiliated with the project as a producer and a lead actor. He plays a veteran detective who lost his son. He is later assigned to the case of a successful anchorman who went through a personal tragedy.

Crash Landing On You(2019-2020): In the original series the female lead plays a South Korean heiress who “crash-landed” on the North Korean part of the DMZ while paragliding and meets a Captain in the Korean People’s Army who helps her hide. Recently CJ ENM in a conference call announced the remake of the show with a joined force with Studio Dragon and Netflix.

The plot of the Korean show was dependent on the tension between North and South Korea. So it will be interesting to see which two regions’ political and geographical divisions will play this key role in the new story. The remake has already garnered huge attention with just this mere announcement.

Through these K-Dramas, the South Korean culture with their creative storytelling has no doubt spread in every corner of the globe. And if Hollywood actually manages to execute the depiction of these stories perfectly, that trajectory will only move higher. So, keep a lookout for these shows in the future.
