Kendrick Lamar has set a new record as the first rapper to have three solo albums land in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart at the same time, as recently announced by a leading US entertainment magazine.
Following his Super Bowl halftime performance on February 9, Lamar’s albums “GNX”, “DAMN”, and “good kid”, “m.A.A.d city” climbed to the No. 1, No. 9, and No. 10 spots, respectively.
Lamar’s Super Bowl performance also broke a viewership record, attracting 133.5 million viewers, just edging out Michael Jackson’s 1993 performance, which previously held the record with 133.4 million viewers.
Billboard stated on its website, “This marks the first time in the nearly 69-year history of the chart that a rap artist has had at least three albums simultaneously in the Top 10. The Billboard 200 has been published weekly since March 1956.”
Taylor Swift previously held the record for having at least three albums in the Top 10, as recorded on the Billboard 200 chart dated December 9, 2023.
Before Taylor Swift, American trumpeter and pianist Herb Alpert became the first male artist to achieve this milestone on December 24, 1966. Decades later, Prince also accomplished this feat posthumously after his passing in 2016.
