Yesterday on the 22nd of April the world celebrated Earth Day. It’s a day in which every environment-conscious person takes a step back to reflect on the health of our planet.
Where did Earth Day come from?
The history of earth day takes us back to 1970 when US senator and environmentalist wanted to shed light on the importance of clean air and water. This event took place following an oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969. After this, a surprising 20 million people all around the US came down to the streets. Earth day became an international campaign in the 90s. And in 2009 it got 22nd April as its official day.
What happened this year?
On this year’s earth day the theme was #InvestInOurPlanet. When you talk about climate change, money has to be part of the discussion at some point. Therefore, this year’s theme was to highlight the importance of investments in order to make a more greener and more sustainable world. There were online events, planting ceremonies, online campaigns and so on going around for the event.
How can we contribute?
Creating a collective consciousness to create a more sustainable planet for us is important. Gen Zs are already rejecting brands that are the root cause of pollution across the globe. And we can certainly do more. We can support and also contribute to causes that are more environment friendly or working towards attaining a more green world. We can also boycott corporations responsible for this pollution as well.
