For the past few years, the construction of a nuclear powerplant is taking place in Bangladesh. This powerplant is being constructed at Rooppur in Pabna’s Ishwardi. Thousands of Russians were hired for the purpose of the powerplant. This had led to creating their own little town in Rooppur.
The nuclear power plant in Rooppur is a project by the government of Bangladesh to tackle the high increase in demand for electricity. An estimated 4000 Russians were hired for this project. The work on this project started around 2017 and is supposed to end by 2023.
Since the powerplant construction took place the locality around the power plant started drastically changing. If you go there you’ll notice high-rise buildings and shops, shopping malls to cater to the needs of the Russians who have made this their home for the time being. You might end up seeing shops and restaurants with Russian names and wonder if it’s actually a place in Bangladesh or not.
The urbanization of the town is not the only thing that you might notice. The shopkeepers and the locals are also learning Russian. Its a beautiful harmony between the two cultures.
This place in Rooppur started coming to people’s notice after the construction of a 20 storied high-rise building in Notun Hat. It drew the attention of many travel bloggers. It even appeared in a vlog on YouTube.
Before the powerplant, no one even knew about this little town in Pabna. However, now it’s developing very rapidly. Due to the powerplant, many people got new work opportunities and it helped them make a better living.
