Most of us at least once in our lives have been a part of a heated conversation. Or at least encountered one in front of us. Every relationship you have whether it’s with a parent, a friend, or a significant other will come to a point where you have disagreements. Therefore, keeping your calm during those is something not all of us can easily do. So, here are some ways to keep your cool when you are in disagreement with another person.

Try to listen to what the other person is saying

Oftentimes during an argument, we just fight without fully comprehending what the other person is saying. First, listen to the person and their viewpoint with an open mind. And later decide whether it’s something you want to acknowledge or not. This sounds simple but this is key.

Try breathing exercises

Trying controlled breathing is an important hack you can adapt to avoid getting angry. It might sound like mumbo jumbo to you at first but there is some science behind it. During a fight, the blood flows away from your brain towards your adrenal system. By taking deep breaths the much-needed blood in your brain redirects and helps you calm down.

Try not to raise your voice

Raising your voice at someone will never give you a solution. It will only make matters worse. Learning how to communicate your anger and frustration even calmly to the other will save you from saying things you later regret.

Try not to take things personally

In arguments, if you feel attacked right away you’ll definitely lose. Instead of getting hurt trying to understand the other person’s emotions. Acknowledge the problems that are causing the argument in the first place.

Think of something funny

Lastly, I would suggest resorting to humor. Either you think of something funny or try to tell the other person something funny. This is a great way of lightening the mood. This will give you a chance to take a break and discuss in a mature way.
