As time demands, Nepal is on lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Therefore, hundreds of travelers from different countries of the world trapped in some of the country’s highest mountain trails. At least 500 foreign mountaineers from at least four trekking routes were unable to return due to lockdown.

Shraddha Shrestha, a spokesperson from the Nepal Tourism Board, said that they are working with various government agencies to rescue the mountaineers. They are also trying to bring them back to Kathmandu (capital of Nepal).  However, she also added that they will coordinate with the embassies so that mountaineers can return to their country. Some embassies, such as Germany and France, already planning to send chartered planes to several areas to rescue travelers.

Shraddha Shrestha also said that Nepal Tourism Board has launched a website so that trapped travelers can easily get the help they need.

Kedar Bahadur Adhikari, secretary of the Nepal Ministry of Tourism, said that the high altitude in the mountains always obstructed the breathing of travelers. In addition, one of the symptoms of coronavirus is shortness of breath. For this reason, the Nepal government declared the suspension of climbing all the mountains of the country on March 13. The suspension included on the world’s highest mountain Everest. Authority declared that the access will close until next month, the last week of April.
