Researchers at Northwestern University in the US state of Illinois have created this mask. Researchers have developed a method that chemically alters the mask droplets and makes them less contagious. With this method, the researchers converted the fabrics into germ filters.
The masks made by them greatly reduce the risk of airborne infections by sanitizing the droplets. The researchers simulated a variety of respiratory actions (such as inhaling, exhaling, coughing, and sneezing) to prove their point in the laboratory. For example, they show that a lint-free handkerchief with a fiber density of 19 percent can sanitize droplets up to 82 percent.
The researchers added that the mask of non-woven fabric does not interfere with the process of breathing. At the same time, the effectiveness of chemically modified masks remains the same.
