Berlin International Film Festival is always been one of the top three festivals of film festival circuits. The other two are the Venice Film Festival and Cannas Film Festival. Since 1978, this Berlin International Film Festival has been held every year in February.
A surprise!
This year it’s already buzzing controversy and comes to us as a shock because the top award of Golden Bear won by a banned director! Yes, it’s true. Controversial Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof’s “There is No Evil” received the Golden Bear award this year. The film’s story revolves around the decision of the death penalty as the highest sentence and the humanitarian conflict and stands behind such decisions.
Sadly, the Iranian government has banned Rasoulof from making films since 2017. In this situation, he made his sixth film ‘There Is No Evil’ with great secrecy. He was also banned from traveling abroad and had to spend a year in jail for allegedly threatening the security of his country and making propaganda!
As a result, Rasoulof could not attend the festival. His daughter, Baran, received the award on behalf of her father. Jeremy Irons, head of the festival’s jury board, said the film told four stories of the death penalty.
These four stories told the consequences of dictatorial atrocities on ordinary people. But despite being unable to physically attend at Berlin, Mohamed Rasoulof attended a Skype video conference at a press conference there.
