International Nurses Day is being observed as a day of recognition and respect for nurses who have unique responsibilities in human service. The day has been celebrated since 1965. A nurse means one dedicated soul. A nurse means a flash of light in a dark room. May 12 is celebrated as International Nurses Day mainly in honor of Florence Nightingale, a pioneer of modern nursing. This year the theme of the day is: ‘Nurses are a voice to lead — Nursing is the world to health’.

The pioneer of nursing Florence Nightingale was born on 12 May 1820 in Florence, Italy. She was very beautiful; on the other hand, she was very kind and affectionate. She is called the beacon of light in the darkness of Europe.

Nightingale’s father was a wealthy landowner who owned two states. When Nightingale was just in her teens, her wealthy father set out on a trip to Europe with the whole family. This trip brought about a major change in the thinking of young Nightingale.

Nightingale first felt the pull of human service while living in London at the age of 18. She later called this feeling the “call of God.” But her family objected to taking the service as a vow of life. At that time nursing was the profession of low-income, helpless, widowed women. She overcame strong family objections and trained herself in nursing techniques and knowledge.

Due to his travels in different countries, he was trained in the concept of the service system in those countries and in the relatively advanced system. In 1853 he took charge of a girls’ hospital in London.

Nightingale’s greatest contribution was to stand by sick soldiers in the Crimean War. On her own initiative, she ran away to the war field with a team of 36 volunteers. Which is still a unique example of nursing service.

Although the day has been celebrated in the world since 1965, Bangladesh has been celebrating the day in the country since 1974. This time there is no way to celebrate this day officially like many other days in Corona situation. The nurses themselves are risking their lives to serve the victims in Corona from their respective positions.
