Bangladesh’s first female photographer Sayeeda Khanam is no longer with us. She died at 3 am on Monday (August 17th). One of her family members said she had been suffering from various complications for a long time. She was 82 years old.

Sayeeda Khanam holds a Masters in Bengali Literature and Library Science from Dhaka University. She was born in Pabna on 29th December 1937.

 

Through Begum Potrika, Sayeeda Khanam first started working as a photojournalist. Then her photos published in various newspapers including The Observer, Ittefaq, Sangbad, etc. As a photographer, she attended various international seminars at home and abroad. She also worked as a photographer in several films of Satyajit.

 

There were several exhibitions of her paintings taken in India, Japan, France, Sweden, Pakistan, Cyprus, and the United States. She received various recognitions including UNESCO awards in Japan, Ananya Top Ten Award, 50th-anniversary award of Begum Magazine, Honorary Fellow of Bangladesh Photographic Society.

 

Alongside her photography passion, she used to write also. Her notable books include ‘Dhulomati’, ‘Smitir Poth Beye’, ‘Amar chokhe Satyajit Ray’. She was a lifelong member of the Bangla Academy and UNB.
